Botox Q & A

What is BOTOX?

BOTOX is a name-brand neuromodulator that works by impeding the nerve impulses that cause your muscles to contract. You might not realize it, but involuntary muscle contractions induce many of the wrinkles and fine lines you see on your face. BOTOX can also treat certain conditions linked to involuntary muscle contractions.

Dysport and Xeomin, two similar injectable neuromodulators, work in the same way as BOTOX and include the same main ingredient: botulinum toxin. The toxin comes from bacteria called Clostridium botulinum and is the same toxin that causes botulism.

The experts at Moulton Group PC inject BOTOX carefully in minimal amounts to make sure the drug only affects targeted muscles. That means you won’t look expressionless or frozen as a result of your injections. You can use neuromodulators to target just one muscle or several areas to make a more noticeable difference in your appearance.

What can BOTOX treat?

BOTOX, Dysport, and Xeomin can provide temporary treatment for various dynamic wrinkles, or wrinkles that develop because of the way your muscles move. These include:

  • Horizontal forehead lines
  • Vertical frown lines between your brows
  • Crow’s feet wrinkles
  • Horizontal neck lines
  • Bunny lines on your nose

Your provider at Moulton Group PC might also recommend BOTOX injections for a slight brow lift, to treat migraines, or to reduce excessive underarm sweating from hyperhidrosis. You can discuss the goals you’d like to reach during your initial consultation. If you have other areas you want to target, your provider can tell you whether or not neuromodulators are the right option.

How long does it take to see the results of BOTOX?

You might not notice much of a difference in the wrinkles and lines you target with BOTOX, Dysport, or Xeomin right away. While you can go straight home or back to work without any downtime after the injections, it typically takes 24-72 hours for the drug to take effect. In rare cases, it takes up to five days.

How long does BOTOX last?

BOTOX, Dysport, and Xeomin last for months at a time. Depending on the targeted treatment area, neuromodulators can last for 3-12 months in total. This isn’t to say that you can only enjoy the effects for as long as they last — you can get BOTOX, Dysport, or Xeomin injections regularly at Moulton Group PC for ongoing improvement in your appearance or symptoms.
